Extra Credit lecture

Kate, Sam, and Amy

On April 20th 2017 loyola host and editor from the baltimore sun to come and talk about the news paper and the future of journalism big or small. Before he started talking he gave some background information about himself. He graduated from here Loyola Maryland University, but when he went here it was called Loyola Maryland  college. He met his wife here while working on the school news paper (Green and white) and made many friends. When he first came to Loyola he wanted to be a Bio  Major, but he soon realized that bio wasn’t for him. He went to his advisor for there yearly meeting and he advisor told him that he should think about changing his major and maybe working for the news paper. The rest was history.

Something important that he said was the “journalism isn’t leaving  its just changing”. He said that we have to adapt to the times we are in. When he was in college no one really had cell phones and now thats probably the first thing you check every morning before you get out of bed. news papers are a dying profession because most people now a days don’t get an actual news paper they just get there news from there computers or on there iPhones, iPads, and or smartphones.

On the baltimore sun the write article on nation wide events, local event, sports, and they cover stories that touch peoples hearts not just through writing but through pictures as well. The baltimore sun covered the Rokerton when loyola got a world record for crab walking. Instead of the classic printing it out in the newspaper, they had videos and pictures of people participating and watching the students crab walking on the quad. They also interviewed Al Roker on what he though about the crab walk on video.

Since journalism isn’t going away because people need to know everything in this day in age it will be easier if we learn how to adapt to new things that come along. people were shocked when the first iPhone came out because it was something they have never seen before. people we interested by the internet because it was something that was so new and different. Both of these things everyone takes for granted today. Who’s to say that something next isnt going to come around and change the way we read our news next.

Project so far

Kate, Sam, and Paul

If you see anything while you’re researching write it down under the question

  1. Possible job positions
    1. Producer
      1. A film producer are responsible for the behind the scenes decisions from movies such as those regarding films finances scripts selections and cast management. Film producers aren’t always required to have certain educational credentials. However a bachelors and masters degree programs that give them a solid knowledge of business practices and are helpful to filmaking or broadcasting.
    2. Scriptwriter
      1. They create the plot and characters and the dialog in a motion picture. While some screen writers may focus their work on creating original stories other may prefer to use their talents to adapt books or plays into films scripts. Writing is essential to become a screenplay writers but a regular paycheck is not a guarantee. So it is also important for individuals to network and make connections in order to get their work read by producers and directors.
        1. Salary median salary for all writers and authors is 58,850 per year.
    3. Talent Agent
      1. Agents find scripts for their actor or director clients to read. They shop around their clients’ headshots, film reels, and original scripts to studios and independent production companies across the country. 1. current state of employment in the profession
  2. Changes
in the profession that may affect employment. For example, the expansion of the
Internet means advertising firms will need those who can design ads suitable
for web sites.
  • Producers
    • In 2004 there was 122,600 jobs and the outlook is just expanding. 9% faster than average. This is because more and more actors and actresses want to produce their own shows or movies. There are many celebrities that have made a name for themselves on the big screen and then they decide that they want to direct something.
    • Employment of producers and directors is projected to have a growth of 9% from 2014 and 2024. This is moving at a very fast pass. Some jobs growth in the motion picture industry is expected to stem from strong demand of the public. If more people are looking at movies and looking forward to movies. People also are more demanding to watch tv so they need more producers and directors. Also because of this day in age foreign audiences are more and more popular for US produced films. Also since everyone is very into seeing what celebrities are like reality tv shows are more popular than ever. There is a high in demand for reality shows on TV, this has expended and expected to increase so more producers and directors will be need to create and oversee editing these programs.
    • Production companies are experimenting with new content, and different methods of delivery. Something that they will have to think of is different ways to watch tv, such as watching them on mobile phones and online which will lead to more job opportunities for producers and directors in the future do to the fast growth of technology.
    • Selena gomez, became very popular due to her show on disney channel and her music, is now one of the executive producers on the new netflix show thirteen reasons why that are on netflix.
    • Bureau of Labor Statistics, U.S. Department of Labor, Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2016-17 Edition, Producers and Directors,
    • on the Internet at https://www.bls.gov/ooh/entertainment-and-sports/producers-and-directors.htm (visited April 10, 2017).
  • Writers
    • Writers and authors are projected to grow 2 percent from 2014 to 2024, this unfortunately a slower rise in average for all occupations. Despite the slower than average employment growth online publication and services are growing in numbers. Some experienced writers could find work in public relations department or nonprofit organizations.
    • I also think that if there are more producers and more directors that they are going to need to have more and more people that need to help write their scripts.
  1. Education

The education requirements of a producer is a bachelor’s degree, joint master of business administration/ Master of fine art are also helpful to have.

A theater management bachelor’s degree program can include classes in acting directing, and script study and staging plays. Additional students learn accounting public relations and management skills. Film studies degree may be helpful as well.

My story project

by: Kate Mills

For my My Story, I chose to make a video about my high school soccer team mainly on my senior year. I chose this because growing up all I wanted to do was be on this team. I would go to Mason soccer games when 8 or 9 and look up to these players because I thought that they were amazing. But really after joining the team I realized that the team and program is like a family. We would tell people that we are a family and that we each have 17 sisters because thats how close our team was. Something that I struggles with while making this video was the voice over because Im not the loudest talker. also I was very stressed about picking out a song that fit the videos I used and the pictures and a song that added to my theme of family and having a great time. Something that I’m most proud of in the video is that it flows well and that I was able to get all the pictures I wanted in the video. Somethings I added and took aaa from the video after my critique day was, I took out the part of my talking about the second clarke country game, and i added more subtitles. Also I made myself louder during the part about the first clarke county.  I added credits and I also added a subtitles that explained that its my senior year.

Harry Potter Fandom

Kate Mills and Sam Schultz

Ever since the first book came out in June of 1997 people, we immediately hooked on the characters of Harry, Ron, and Hermione. The way JK Rowling created the world of the Wizarding World made it seem real and created a place the children and young adults wanted to go to. When the movies came out of November 2001 the three young actors and actress, Daniel Radcliff, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson captivated everyone and had them hooked. When the books and movies came out people would have books clubs based on the book, read each chapter and talk about it with your friends. Also, there would be viewing parties and watch the movie with your buddies.

Many things in the Harry Potter world make this “fake” world community. Having the books available in bookstores everywhere, online of Amazon, or Kindle. It gives people the chance to read and become a part of this world. Through these networks, a community was created. In these books, we get to read what JK Rowling was trying to convey while creating this world. When JK Rowling was releasing new books, people would wait in line for hours and would camp out for days for the latest book.

When new movies were coming out people would camp out to get tickets and stay in the same spot for days so that they could see the red carpet and see Emma, Daniel, Rupert, and the rest of the cast. Fans would dress up in robes of their favorite house for the premieres and purchase wands that Harry and the rest of the cast had. There’s a website called Pottermore where you can take a test to find out what house you are in and what kind of a wand you would have if you were apart of the community. There are also video games that you can play on Xbox, Wii, and connect where you are harry and his friends going through their story of that year.

This world is much more than just books and movies. Kids have birthday parties based around Harry Potter. Children imagine that they are a part of this fantasy, by dressing up in robes and getting wands and playing with their friends as if they were Harry and Hermione.

Harry Potter has become such a fan favorite over the years that Universal Studios created an amusement park base on Harry Potter. They recreated the Hogwarts castle, and Hogsmeade the town next to Hogwarts, they also add to it and created Diagon Ally where the student o hog warts get their school supplies in London before they get on the train at platform 9 3/4. Instead of just watching it or reading about it, you can put yourself into their world when you walk in the park.Hogwarts_-_Wizarding_World_of_Harry_Potter_-_Hollywood.jpg

YouTube is a great way for fans to connect to other Harry Potter fanatics around the world. Here is a clip that demonstrates how fans interact. Fan art allows one to express their talent and love for Harry Potter.

Born the hard way

By Kate Mills

For Super Bowl 51 Budweiser wanted to go in a different approach. This super bowl marks there 28th birthday of having an ad in the super bowl. This commercial captures the true heritage of the Budweiser product and the man that started it all. In the 60 seconds that Budweisers had for there commercial they chose to focus there and the audiences attention on Adolphus Busch ( co- founder of Budweiser) and he emigrated from Germany to St. Louis Missouri. With the soft music playing the background, it lets the audience focus on his journey. Letting people notice all the hardship he had to endure during his travel. From the horrible boat ride, to not being wanted in America, to jumping off at burring boat, to walking to St. Louis. When he finally makes it to St. Louis, some one who was walking by him say ” welcome to St. Louis”. Which sold him on staying in St. Louis. At the end we find out that the man that offered him a drink was the other co-founder of BudweiserScreen Shot 2017-02-12 at 2.10.49 PM.png

Something different about this commercial is that it doesn’t feel like one. Its not a classic super bowl commercial, filled with comedy, and thrown in your face of what the company is trying to sell you on. Its more set as a movie trailer. Only at the end we find out what they are trying to sell the audience. The music isn’t over powering the commercial, it almost helped the audience follow along what is happening. when the music gets louder, more exciting things are happening, when the music gets soft it lets you hear what the actors are saying.

Budweiser wants to permute freedom and the pursuit of the American dream are nothing wit out ambition. this is something that the brand has believed in throughout its 141 years of being a company, directly dating back to when Adolphus Busch came to america. Some symbols in this commercial are that Adolphus Busch is the ideal American Dreamer. He is coming from a different country in the hopes that this new opportunity will make a difference in his life. Also in this commercial we get to see a glimpse of horses when Busch gets to Saint Louis. There are shots of two Clydesdales standing in the background. This is important foreshadowing because those horses will become the new mascot of the company. Seeing the horses in a good place where people want him could be an indicator that those horses would be a good mascot.

Screen Shot 2017-02-12 at 2.08.32 PM.png

Screen Shot 2017-02-12 at 2.10.49 PM.pngThis commercial is for everyone. Not so much younger kids but the ages between 21-40. It shows that everyone can chance there dreams and do what they want. August A Busch iii says “his story will resonate with consumers from all walks of life and provide a lasting point of connection to the brand”. this isn’t a commercial that is singling one group, but is something for everyone and anyone can get something out of it.

According to CBS a 30 second spot during the Super Bowl would cost about 5 Million dollars. With an average of 114.4 million views you could see why they would set the price to high for an ad. Budweiser is worth about 23.4 billion dollars. In 2016 it was place on the Forber list of worlds most Valuable Brands. After seeing this commercial Trump supports though it was stick to his administration on the whole immigration ban. They were tweets going around saying #boycottBudweiser. Budweiser said that they had this commercial planned in advance of the ban so it had nothing to do with Trump. The commercial was more focused on painting a picture of the american dream.

A Country Divided

Friday January 20th 2017 will be the date that people will look back upon and either be happy or extremely sad. This date will go down in history as the day that Donald Trump was sworn into the White House and became the President of the United States. When Donald Trump won the election many people were confused. Everyone thought that Hillary Clinton would take office. After being shocked with the results people started say that they were going to move to Canada, South America and Europe. In addition to people wanting to leave the country many people were in fear of our president and the things he has said. People questioned their religion, their values, and how they thought about themselves.

Parents were deviated and thought that it was their fault. People lost friends that they have had for many years just based on who voted for who.

For most of the people in the country they didn’t know what was going on or how this could have happened. During the inauguration Loyola set up a teach in. From my understand it was a place were people could go and talk about how they feel and ask questions. IMG_3238.JPGIMG_3240.JPG

During the inauguration people were trashing Washington DC in protest, but that following day there was a peace protest called “the Women’s March”. There was and estimated 500,000 women in attendance in Washington alone IMG_3246.PNG

fighting for what you believe in and doing it in a peaceful way is more empowering that putting people down. The day after the inauguration people came together to make a difference. One person doesn’t make America great, we all do.
